Florida Earns Highest Marks on the NCTQ State Teacher Policy Yearbook

Monday, January 30, 2012 Tallahassee, Florida – The National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) released its State Teacher Policy Yearbook, grading states on the adoption of teacher evaluation and other teacher improvement measures. This year, Florida received a B, the highest grade NCTQ has ever awarded.

“Once again, Florida is a model for the nation,” said Patricia Levesque, Executive Director of the Foundation for Florida’s Future. “Last year, Governor Scott and Florida lawmakers displayed their united commitment to student-centered education by passing SB 736, the historic ‘Student Success Act.’ Because of their work, Florida has earned high marks from NCTQ’s State Teacher Policy Yearbook.”

“I thank our lawmakers for laying the groundwork to provide Florida’s students with a dynamic, highly-skilled workforce of educators. This year, Florida earned significant recognition in teacher policy, but we must continue moving forward. I am committed to working with our state lawmakers to continue improving education in Florida.”

For the past five years, NCTQ has published the State Teacher Policy Yearbook. The 2011 edition contains over 9,000 pages of analysis covering 51 state volumes and a national overview report. The yearbook takes a comprehensive look at the state policies that shape the teaching profession, including evaluation, accountability, and teacher improvement.
